Due to the small town, Fortmount residents are very familiar with each other and almost always attend the same school. Since elementary, Spears was the town's bully. She would often prey on Daisy Peterson and her Tripod, Bethany Wagner and Priscilla Lambert. When Mina Abrams had moved all the way from Creek Ridge, North Dakota to Fortmount to stalk Peterson, she needed to find a stable job to support herself there. She and Spears had romantically gotten involved privately while Abrams was studying at Fortmount Academy University. Once graduating, Spears helped her get a job as a Teacher's Assistant for Mr. Isaacs at the same high school Peterson and Spears went to, Fortmount High.

During her senior year, Spears was outted by a fellow cheerleader and her high school reputation had gone down the drain. She had sought comfort from Abrams only to be rejected and abandoned. It became clear to her that Abrams did not truly feel the same for her. Eventually, the Tripod would befriend her but just before graduation, Peterson had mysteriously disappeared and a state-wide search was undertaken to find her with no avail. This had weighed on Wagner for many years and often sought comfort with Lambert and Spears, both who had participated in search parties. The disappearance also had its toll on Spears, resulting in her moving to California, where in time she was reunited with Abrams. The pair had taken a little while to get to know each other again before entering a more permanent romantic relationship. The couple married and while Spears went on to politics, Abrams returned to school to become a psychologist.
