Fox (TV series)

Fox is an American fantasy adventure drama streaming series that streamed for four seasons on SkySoft Stream from January 7, 2016 to August 26, 2019. In the first three seasons the action alternates between two main settings: a fantastical world called Gan Adan (Dream World); and a small fictional town in North Dakota, called Fortmount. The "dream-world" part of the story unfolds with the characters of Fox of Auxdra (Monroe Hayden) and her journey as she fulfills a prophecy with her friends, Oron (Hunter Tabiendo), Deja (Sheana Turner), Prince Orasmin (Daniel Andrade) and Davi (Kealoha Nakamura) by her side, in conjunction with unfolding events in the "real-world" where Daisy Peterson (Melanie Tornroth then later Jade Vourkari) lives. In the final season, the show focused its setting in Gan Adan.

All of the show's characters from Fortmout are extracted from the novel-series, Daisy by Xavier Haven but all Gan Adan characters, with the exception of Fox, were invented for the show.

Fox was created by Adriana Escandon and Monroe Hayden but Escandon later stepped from the show to pursue photography and left it with Hayden. The core theme of the show is hope.

Two spin-off series, Ronin and a Baptism of Storms and Eve and the Fall of the Seven, consisting of 6 episodes each, featuring the title character's of Ronin, Fox and Daisy's daughter, and Eve, Fox's mother were announced on August 18, 2019. On June 26, 2020, SkySoft announced that due to Covid-19, Ronin was cancelled but that Eve was pending.

Series Overview

In the first three seasons, the show alternates between Fortmount and Gan Adan. The first season was more of a side-story between Fox and Mina Abrams (Allyson Moyer), and therefore deemed a prequel and unnecessary to the "prophecy plot" the following seasons heed. This was due to the possibility of future seasons being unknown at the time of its creation. Fans have since created many versions in which order to watch the show but in August 2020, SkySoft offered their version by separating seasons in parts with Season 2 as Part 1, Season 3 as Part 2, and Season 4 as Part 3 with Season 1 as The Prequel.

Season 1 (2016)

The first season (the prequel) focuses on the declining friendship between Fox and Mina Abrams with hints and clues of Gan Adan, its residents and their abilities. Although the show primarily takes place in the "dream-world", it does occasionally set in Fortmount and the fictional town of Creek Ridge, North Dakota.

Season 2 (2017)

The second season (Part 1), takes place two-years after the events of season 1 and focuses on the love-story between Fox and Daisy Peterson, played by Melanie Tornroth, introducing the prophecy subplot that Fox is destined to fulfill: save Gan Adan by "bringing the light where there was once darkness". The season also provides a second subplot that takes place in Fortmount that focuses on Peterson's life that drastically contrasts Fox's. The season introduces Daisy Peterson, Rath I (Steven Acedo), Shevan of Raxnavov (Terrell Cooper), Bethany Wagner (Jorgie Mason), Priscilla Lambert (Briana Celia) Rebecca Spears (Angel New), Brian Whittaker (Ricky Garcia) and Merila (Janelle Garcia), and ends with Fox and Daisy being separated by Rath I, the show's main antagonist. It is also the last season featuring a physical appearance by Mina Abrams.

Season 3 (2018)

The following season (Part 2), takes place minutes after season 2's finale with Fox , now deemed Fox of Auxdra, ignoring the prophecy and focusing on her search to reunite with Daisy, now played by Jade Vourkari. She is quickly joined by a bunch of misfits, Oron of Kova, Prince Orasmin of Xoatia, Deja of Ioshna and Davi of Hacradia later known as The Brotherhood, who encourage her to fulfill the prophecy. The season primarily focuses on Fox embracing her destiny that provides the foundation of one of the subplot's of the season that focuses on her heritage while ushering the cautionary introduction of Dramon, Dark Magic. The second subplot continues the love-story between Fox and Daisy as the season's events provide more struggles that the youthful couple did not anticipate. The season also finishes the third subplot of Daisy's contrasting life in Formount with her choosing to stay with Fox in Gan Adan. The season ends with Daisy giving Fox the remaining Dramon from Deja, in an attempt to save her life. New characters such as The Brotherhood and Alliel of Viscardia (Jacob Maciel), the shows third villain next to Rath I and Merila, are introduced this season.

Season 4 (2019)

The final season (Part 3) is set one-year after the events of the season prior with Dark Fox being completely addicted to Dramon, committing horrific acts as Daisy leads The Brotherhood to help rescue her. The season primarily focuses on continuing and ending the prophecy plot by letting go of the past to move forward; Fox learning to forgive herself of the acts she's committed in the past, and finally embracing the responsibilities of being the "Chosen One". The season's subplot continues with Fox and Daisy's love-story as the couple evolve into mature adults that overcome many emotional obstacles together. The second subplot continues Fox's heritage and family with Eve (Janelle Garcia) now a member of The Brotherhood, and the introduction of Anu, Fox's half-brother. The show ends with a scene that flashes forward then back again between Fox and Daisy's wedding and Fox's death as their daughter, Ronin, continues the legacy Fox left behind. New characters consisted of Anu played by Christian Reed and Sylvan of Viscardia played by Bryon Allen.

Cultural Impact

Fox developed an alternative family lifestyle by representing young people that live unconventional domestic lives. It presents the idea that "all you need is good friends" and can construct families through choice. The audience is able to identify with the program through the troubles seen on its episodes. It portrays a new way of living life and developing relationships which are not normally seen in conventional society.

The show also provided diverse representation that primetime television series don't feature with only three caucasian actors, the rest being bi-racial or multi-racial. In addition, it is one of very few shows centered on lesbian love-interests without having a third love-interest be a male.

Development and Production

Conception

In 2011, Monroe Hayden met fellow artists and entrepreneur's Brandon Teague and Xavier Haven. They worked together on the Daisy novel series and the three of them became great friends. Each member of the tripod, in the books, represents one of them but none had revealed who is who. By 2014, Haven sold the novel and its rights to Hayden and Teague in the event of his daughter's birth. Hayden and Teague then started their production company, Hayden/Teague and began developments on converting Daisy into a series.

Daisy writer, Xavier Haven explained on his Facebook and Deviantart that he partially owns the rights to Daisy after selling it to Monroe Hayden and Brandon Teague who were original artists for the series. They later created Hayden/Teague LLC..

With Monroe Hayden owning the rights, characters and story, she and business partner, Adriana Escandon , who together made A&S Productions decided to create a prequel to the books and were the ones to give Mina Abrams a name and created new character, Alexander Veitch . Mina was in the books as a very minor character who had a similar experience to Daisy Peterson with a mysterious dream girl, however, Peterson's experience in the show differs from the ending in the books. Hayden and Escandon, with Haven, agreed to make Abrams the same character.

In 2015, Teague died of a blood infection which left Hayden with the responsibilities of the company. She often sought advice from Haven. In 2016, Fox (2016) premiered in January. Upon the show's premiere, Teague's family requested the company name be changed. Hayden then changed the name to SkySoft Entertainment.

Casting

Writer Xavier Haven revealed on his Facebook that he wrote the character of Fox with Monroe Hayden in mind, and suggested she play the role but Hayden was unsure of the task since the character wasn't too developed in the books, and seemed "boring". Teague and Haven seriously considered her for the role of Mina Abrams but both weren't confident in the idea. In result, Haven suggested Hayden help develop the character and help write the first season with Fox having a dark side to her. Finding this intriguing, Hayden created a small Guide describing the world of Gan Adan, its histories and beings, with Fox having inherited a darkness from her mother. Haven and Teague liked the idea and offered her the role in which she accepted. In late 2017, Hayden chose a cutlass sword that she was unaware was made specifically for left-handed swordsman. In result, Hayden spent 6-months additional training to use her left hand just to use that specific sword.

As of April 21, 2014, the creators of the show, Fox, released teaser posters suggesting that Mina was a lot more innocent than the version depicted in the books. Xavier Haven also revealed, shortly before, that the series sets as a prequel to the Daisy series. Mina was initially to be portrayed by Instragram model, Alexis Naiomi, but she unexpectedly left the production. Her photos were released with her as Mina Abrams for promotion before her departure. On July 11, 2015, A&S Productions announced that actress Allyson Moyer won the role of Mina Abrams.

Melanie Tornroth was cast to play Daisy Peterson in season 2 and although both fans and critics praised her version of the character and interaction with Hayden, she did not return for the remaining seasons. At San Diego Comic Con in 2017, Hayden had revealed the news saying, "she was unavailable". In result, SkySoft had auditioned 107 actresses for the role with Carla Ricci cast as the character but after two days filming, Ricci dropped out due to personal issues that would prevent her from finishing the series. 46 more actresses were auditioned with Jade Vourkari earning the role and portraying Daisy Peterson for the remaining seasons. Vourkari revealed in a podcast interview, Beyond the Page with Daniel Andrade, that the audition process consisted of two parts: interviews and boot camp. In the following months, Hayden revealed that the interview portion was conducted to see if Vourkari's personality fit well with the rest of the cast members, while the boot camp portion was conducted to see if she could perform the stunts required of her. The boot camp consisted of an introduction to fencing and sparring which she then was assigned to spar with Hayden and Janelle Garcia during the audition. Once she won the role, she was introduced to archery and revealed that the bow held 25lbs to 30lbs of pressure in which she had to "develop muscles" to pull it as far back as she does in the show, over and over, take after take.

Filming

Principal photography for the series took place in San Diego, California. Coronado the resort city across from San Diego Bay doubles as Fortmount for the series while Mission Trails Regional Park served as the setting for Gan Adan in season 2, and Cleveland National Forest as the setting in seasons 3 and 4.

Cultural References

Fox is part of an unofficial "SkySoft universe". For example, in season 2, Brian Whittaker reads a fortune cookie out loud that, "A tall dark stranger will enter your life", in which he responds, "Well it better be John Black because I'm not putting out for anybody." Ricky Garcia who plays Whittaker, also plays John Black in SkySoft's second series, 365. In addition, Whittaker and Daisy Peterson (Melanie Tornroth) are on their way to a Samara Smoke concert for their date in the same season. Allyson Moyer plays Samara Smoke in 365. In the first episode of the same season, Priscilla Lambert (Briana Celia) wishes she could stay home and listen to Gwendolyn Fay on repeat while Whittaker listens to Gwendolyn Fay's song, "Baby Blues" in another episode just before talking with Bethany Wagner (Jorgie Mason). Gwendolyn Fay is a character in 365 portrayed by Monroe Hayden.

In 365, Gwendolyn Fay is physically compared to Fox by John Black, in which she responds, "I'm prettier." Black also stars in a show called Fox in the show that is embarking the dreadful "musical episode" due to running out of ideas. Finally, in the finale, Samara Smoke offers Fay the opportunity to open for her new tour in which their first stop would be Fortmount, North Dakota. Smoke also expresses that she feels like she knows Fay in a weird way. Fay responds, "Maybe we met in another universe?"
