SkySoft Entertainment

SkySoft Entertainment, LLC. is an American over-the-top content platform and production company headquartered in Los Angeles, California. SkySoft was founded in 2015 by Monroe Hayden and Brandon Teague. The company's primary business is a subscription-based streaming service offering online streaming from a library of films and television series, particularly those produced in-house. Upon its recent membership- only viewing option launched in February 2021, SkySoft reached over 10,000 subscribers. It is available worldwide except in the following: mainland China (due to local restrictions), Syria, North Korea, and Crimea (due to US sanctions). The company has offices in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Ownership

From 2015 to 2021, SkySoft shares were mainly held by institutional investors until Monroe Hayden bought each one out. Hayden now privately and fully owns the company.

Services

SkySoft's video on demand streaming service, formerly branded as Watch Now, allows subscribers to stream television series and films via the SkySoft website on personal computers and on a variety of supported platforms, including smartphones and tablets, digital media players, video game consoles and smart TVs.

History

SkySoft Entertainment was originally known as Hayden/Teague until changing its name in 2015 upon the death of Brandon Teague, in which his family requested the name be changed.

From 2015 to 2018,  SkySoft used the video platform, Vimeo, to distribute their series Fox (2016 - 2019) and 365 (2017 - 2019) until fully transitioning onto its own platform on its site.

Criticism

Accessibility

SkySoft Entertainment was heavily criticized in 2021 for not providing closed captioning for the deaf or hard of hearing. In result, the company will provide closed captioning for all its content by 2023. In 2021, SkySoft launched AudioScript that was mainly used for its cast members during pre-production and principal photography, however finished projects would use AudioScript versions of films/shows for visually impaired site members.

Broadband and Energy Consumption

Confinement measures taken during the COVID-19 Pandemic increased pressure on the networks with people both working and looking for entertainment at home. SkySoft responded by agreeing to reduce its streaming rate in the European Union countries by 30% for 30 days. Although the streaming rate was cut by 30%, users were still able to stream in HD and 4K with reduced image quality.

Content

In 2019, SkySoft was heavily accused by male groups for producing "man-hating" content due to the network's leads being primarily female. The company did not respond to accusations.

Partnerships

In 2018, the company was accused for not supporting other small filmmakers and production companies by distributing their work on their platform. SkySoft did not respond to accusations at the time. In March 2021, the company opened its doors for more filmmakers to submit their work to be viewed on its site.

Fox

Due to the series being heavily female oriented and starring two female leads who play lesbian characters, the show was banned in various areas that do not support LGBTQ+ rights.

365 Season 2

In 2019, the second installment of 365 was released to an incredibly negative response, in result the season was taken down within 24 hours of its release. In March 2020, the season was rereleased only to be criticized even more harshly with social media users targeting cast and crew members, particularly Kealoha Nakamura and Monroe Hayden. Nakamura being the target of various cyberbullying incidents and Hayden receiving sabotage and rape threats. The future of the season was discussed by Board Members (at the time) and was decided to be taken off the site permanently.
